The Ugandan world chess player Phiona Mutesi alias Queen of Katwe has made her first visit to ARU. The function started on 28th July 2017 with watching an inspirational movie dubbed Queen of Katwe that was on a story about Phiona’s life style in Katwe-Kampala.
The indoor game was commenced by Robert Katende -Phiona’s coach with the chess pioneer team having table playing materials as well as taking the participants through the basic skills.
Participants included ARU, URDT girls’ school, Bunyoro SS and London college, Kagadi S S students and selected URDT and ARU staff as well as various community members.
While presiding over the launch of the chess sports game, the CEO URDT and founder ARU Dr. Mwalimu Musheshe Senior said that the indoor game instills discipline, partnership enhancement as well as visioning that are needed for the generation. “It is an inspiration to the youth embodied with strategic planning and management of all personal skills”, says DR. Musheshe. He however asked the participants in the chess training to focus on the game’s values so that it be meaningful to them.
