From May 26–31, African Rural University (ARU) proudly hosted the 2025 UNESCO Chair Summer School under the theme; “Women-Led Change: Community Engagement and Rural Development in Uganda.”
The program brought together changemakers from ARU, University of Groningen, Makerere University, Gulu University, and Team University to explore practical solutions for grassroots transformation through the topics including, Women’s leadership & gender roles, Community entrepreneurship, Climate resilience and Appropriate technologies for rural development
Learning sessions were multidisciplinary in nature with Dr. Zuula Namubiru , a lecturer from Makerere University and also ARU Council Member), David Monk (UNESCO Chair, Gulu University),Professor Victor Friedman and Dr. Robert Jjuuko (Educationist & Development Consultant)
Participants engaged in focus group discussions, interactive lectures, field visits, engagements with Traditional Wisdom Specialists (Professors Without Papers) at ARU, and made presentations around girls’ education, leadership, and tech for women-led change.
The week wrapped up with a vibrant exhibition, research dissemination, and a certificate ceremony led by Dr. Mwalimu Musheshe, Senior Ashoka Fellow and ARU Vice Chancellor. Josje van der Linden, the UNESCO Chair on Lifelong Learning, Youth & Work commended ARU and participants for a successful and impactful summer school.
