Organic Denmark , URDT, and ARU Join Forces to Champion Organic Farming


On March 15-16th, 2024, a Delegation from Organic Denmark visited African Rural University (ARU) and its mother Organization,Uganda Rural Development and Training Program( URDT)  to explore possible areas of collaboration in advancing organic farming and sustainable agricultural practices.

The visiting delegation from Organic Denmark was led by Sigrid Soelberg Vestergaard, accompanied by Mette Hardie.

Upon their arrival, they were warmly received by Mr. Baguma Apollo, Esfroma Program Manager, and Farmer Family Learning Groups (FFLGs) lead at the Uganda Rural Development and Training Program, alongside Ms. Lucy Noeline.

Discussion with the ARU/URDT

In a special way, The Head of Community Engagement, Mr. John Tusiime welcomed the visitors to African Rural University and briefed them about the history and Background of ARU as a value based all women University whose orientation is from problem solving to a visionary approach to education and rural transformation.

On the uniqueness of African Rural University, Mr. Tusiime noted that ARU education blends theory (60%) and practical application (40%), engaging students in real-life community projects thus fostering the direct link between academic learning and rural transformation.

Alongside typical university lecturers, Mr. John Tusiime also stated that ARU incorporates traditional wisdom specialists into its programs. These specialists serve as custodians of traditional knowledge, skills, and technologies, with their primary role being to integrate traditional wisdom and its associated technologies into the curriculum and teaching practices at ARU.

In her remarks, the Director of Finance and Administration at URDT, Annet Kabasiita, extended a warm welcome to the Organic Denmark team visiting URDT. Highlighting the mission of URDT, Ms. Kabasiita emphasized the organization’s multifaceted approach to rural development adding that the mission and vision of URDT is to catalyze rural transformation to cause system wide change in rural communities.

She also noted that URDT through its pathways namely African Rural University, URDT  Schools and Kagadi Kibaale Community Radio has been facilitating development of rural communities and economies, using the visionary approach to development. This approach is integrated and involves consciousness-raising, training, education, and information sharing so that peoples sleeping genius is awakened to know that they are key to their development.  Ms. Kabasiita equally expressed URDT’s readiness to collaborate with like-minded organizations like Organic Denmark to create positive impact in communities.

In her remarks, Miss Sigrid Soelberg Vestergaard commenced her address by providing a comprehensive overview of Organic Denmark.

She explained that the organization actively promotes and champions organic farming and sustainable practices, not just within Denmark but internationally as well.

Ms. Sigrid further highlighted Organic Denmark’s collaborative approach which involves working with diverse stakeholders like farmers, consumers, government agencies, and international partners to advocate for a world guided by organic principles in both thought and action, creating a positive impact for people, animals, and the planet as a whole

On the visit to Uganda, Ms. Sigrid stated that the purpose is to gather information to support the development of a cross-border youth project proposal, scheduled for submission in April of this year.

This project will focus on establishing a community of practice in Uganda and Denmark dedicated to organic farming.

The meeting was attended by various participants, including ARU’s Bursar, Vincent Baleke, Traditional Wisdom Specialists, Executive Assistant to the VC ARU, Josephine Nampeewo, ARU Guild President, and ARU Student Night Theopista
