ARU Invites Applications – Estates Manager

Location;Kagadi, Uganda | Reports to University Secretary

African Rural University (ARU) invites applications for the position of Estates Manager. ARU is a values-based all-women university in Uganda that provides transformational education to empower students as change agents, community leaders, and innovators in rural development.

The Estates Manager will oversee the planning, maintenance, and operation of all campus facilities, infrastructure, and equipment, ensuring a safe, functional, and sustainable campus environment that supports ARU’s academic, residential, and operational needs.

Key Responsibilities

Campus Infrastructure & Facilities Management

  1. Maintain all buildings, classrooms, halls, staff quarters, and furniture.
  2. Plan, coordinate, and supervise construction, repair, and renovation projects.
  3. Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards.

Utilities Management

  1. Oversee water, electricity, gas, and other utility systems.
  2. Monitor efficiency, safety, and functionality of all services.

Environmental & Waste Management

  1. Supervise waste disposal, composting, and campus cleanliness.
  2. Implement sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.

Contractor & Vendor Coordination

  1. Manage external contractors for civil, mechanical, and electrical works.
  2. Ensure timely completion of projects and adherence to quality standards.

Vehicle & Equipment Oversight

  1. Maintain university vehicles, tractors, machinery, and other operational equipment.
  2. Schedule routine servicing and repairs.

Safety & Security

  1. Ensure campus safety and compliance with institutional policies.
  2. Conduct regular inspections and address hazards promptly.

Budgeting & Resource Management

  • Prepare and manage budgets for estates operations and projects.
  • Ensure efficient use of resources and cost-effective operations.

Reporting & Documentation

  • Maintain records of all facilities, projects, and contractors.
  • Prepare regular reports on maintenance and operational needs.

Supporting the University Mission

  • Contribute to ARU’s rural transformation mission by ensuring a functional, safe, and sustainable campus.

 

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Facilities/Estates Management, or a related field
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in building construction, maintenance, or infrastructure management in medium to large organizations

  2. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship management skills
  3. Knowledge of project management, strategic planning, and budgeting
  4. High integrity, results-oriented, and proficient in report writing

2.BSSA Assistant Lecturer

Position Summary

The Assistant Lecturer will deliver competence-based learning in both crop and animal production, integrating practical fieldwork, village practicums, and indigenous knowledge systems. The role contributes directly to producing graduates capable of transforming rural agricultural practices and livelihoods.

 

Course Units to be Taught

  • BSSA 2201: Principles of Animal and Crop Production and Management
  • BSSA 2202: Crop Protection and Sustainable Disease Management
  • BSSA 2204: Horticultural Crop Production
  • BSSA 4205: Agricultural Extension Programs

 

Key Responsibilities & Expected Outcomes

  1. Competence-Based Teaching & Learning
  • Responsibility: Deliver course content through practical, community-based, and participatory approaches.
  • Outcome: Students acquire hands-on skills in crop and animal production, applicable in real-world rural contexts.
  1. Integration of Indigenous Knowledge
  • Responsibility: Incorporate traditional agricultural practices, local wisdom, and community knowledge into teaching.
  • Outcome: Graduates understand context-specific, sustainable solutions that respect cultural practices.
  1. Student Mentorship & Supervision
  • Responsibility: Guide students during village practicums, internships, and agricultural projects.
  • Outcome: Students demonstrate visionary thinking, leadership, and rural community engagement.
  1. Curriculum Implementation & Innovation
  • Responsibility: Ensure BSSA curriculum delivery aligns with competence-based and community-focused learning principles.
  • Outcome: Graduates meet ARU’s standards for rural transformation leadership and agricultural expertise.
  1. Assessment & Evaluation
  • Responsibility: Design practical assessments, project evaluations, and reflective reports.
  • Outcome: Students’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes are objectively measured, demonstrating readiness for rural transformation.
  1. Community Engagement & Extension
  • Responsibility: Facilitate student-led community agricultural projects and support local farmers through extension programs.
  • Outcome: Students and community members co-create solutions, improving crop and animal productivity sustainably.
  1. Applied Research & Knowledge Generation
  • Responsibility: Conduct applied research integrating scientific and indigenous knowledge.
  • Outcome: Evidence-based practices enhance rural agricultural productivity and sustainability.
  1. Collaboration & Capacity Building
  • Responsibility: Work with colleagues, traditional knowledge specialists, and community leaders to enrich learning.
  • Outcome: Students and communities benefit from a holistic, culturally informed, and practical education experience.

 

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Agriculture with both animal and crop specialization
  • Experience in teaching or applied practice in animal and crop production
  • Experience in agricultural extension, community engagement, or sustainable farming systems

  • Proficiency in competence-based teaching methods
  • Strong mentorship, facilitation, and communication skills
  • Ability to integrate indigenous knowledge and community practices into learning
