A delegation from Kyambogo University recently conducted a three-day learning visit to African Rural University (ARU) in Kagadi District, aimed at gaining deeper insights into transformative, community-centered education models.
Understanding the Visionary Approach to Education
The visit focused on ARU’s Education Model, which is grounded in the Visionary Approach to Education. This framework is designed to nurture visionary leaders and change agents capable of driving sustainable transformation in rural communities.
Throughout their stay, the delegation engaged with ARU leadership, faculty, and students through interactive discussions, learning sessions, and field activities. These engagements offered valuable insights into how the University integrates leadership development, systems thinking, and experiential learning into both academic programs and community outreach.
Field Exposure and Community Engagement
A key highlight of the visit was field exposure in Muhorro Town Council, where the team interacted with community-based training initiatives supported by ARU. These initiatives are led by artisans and agribusiness practitioners who equip young women with market-relevant technical, vocational, entrepreneurial, and soft skills.
This decentralized skills development approach is helping to create pathways for self-employment and sustainable livelihoods within rural communities.
Empowering Change Through ARU Graduates
The delegation also explored the role of Epicentre Managers—graduates of ARU who are actively driving transformation at the grassroots level. Their work demonstrates how visionary education can translate into practical solutions that empower communities and strengthen local economies.
Reflections from the Delegation
Speaking during the visit, Dr. Francis Garizoka, Fieldwork Coordinator at Kyambogo University, emphasized that the engagement aimed at gaining practical insights into the Visionary Approach to Education.
“We have learned a great deal from ARU’s unique approaches. It is clear that these models not only educate but also transform individuals into proactive agents of change,” he noted.
He further expressed Kyambogo University’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with ARU, particularly in advancing academic partnerships and experiential learning opportunities.
ARU’s Commitment to Transformative Education
Madam Muhindo Desire, Dean of Faculty at ARU, encouraged the visiting students to apply the knowledge gained to enhance both their academic and personal growth. She emphasized that ARU’s mission is centered on empowering communities to achieve sustainable development.
Similarly, Mr. Sengozi Bagenda, also a Dean of Faculty at ARU, reaffirmed the University’s openness to partnerships with institutions committed to advancing transformative education and community development.
Student Experiences
Students from Kyambogo University described the visit as impactful, particularly in helping them understand rural transformation from a practical perspective. They appreciated the opportunity to engage with ARU and pledged to apply the skills and knowledge gained in their respective communities.
