A total of 164 students from Makerere University pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Adult and Community Education visited African Rural University (ARU) on April 10, 2026, for a learning exchange aimed at understanding the University’s distinctive approach to education.

Learning the Visionary Approach

The visit centered on ARU’s visionary model of education, which integrates academic theory with practical, community-based learning. During an interactive session, Dr. Mwalimu Musheshe introduced the students to the Visionary Approach to Education, highlighting the importance of having a clear vision in driving both personal growth and community transformation.

Mr. John Tusiime, Senior Lecturer and Head of Community Engagement at ARU, further guided the students through the step-by-step application of the visionary approach in daily life and across different spheres of development.

Field-Based Learning Experience

As part of the visit, the students engaged in field-based learning, where they observed how communities apply the visionary approach to improve livelihoods and promote sustainable development. This hands-on experience enabled them to connect classroom concepts with real-world practice.

Insights into Skills Development Initiatives

The visit also provided an opportunity to interact with artisans implementing the Skills for Income and Youth Empowerment Programme (SIYEP). Through these engagements, students gained practical exposure to skills development initiatives that empower communities, particularly young people, with income-generating capabilities.

Building Future Change Agents

The exposure equipped the students with valuable insights into community transformation, enhancing their understanding of how education can be applied to address real societal challenges. These experiences are expected to inform their future careers in community development and adult education.

The Makerere University delegation was coordinated by Dr. Jordan Byekwaso from the Department of Adult and Community Education. As one of Africa’s oldest and most influential universities, Makerere continues to play a key role in shaping professionals committed to societal transformation.
